Vint Cerf

Vinton Cerf

Vint Cerf was born in 1943, and is considered to be the "Father of the Internet". Cerf graduated from Stanford University in 1965 with a degree in mathematics. He worked for IBM for a short time before going back to school at UCLA, where he gained a doctorate in computer science in 1972. Following that, he went back to Stanford as a member of the computer and electrical staff. While at UCLA, Cerf met several people including Robert Kahn. Together, they created the ARPANET (Advan ed Research Projects Agency Network). This was an enourmous technological invention. After UCLA, Cerf came up with a plan for a packet-switching network, which became the internet. In 1976, Cerf and Kahn created TCP/IP, the Transimision Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. It allowed for packets to be checked and sent between different computers. This became public in 1982, after which Cerf bounced around various technology companies, including Google in 2005. Cerf has earned a large number of honarary degrees from a variety of colleges and universties, as well as many awards for his work in computer science.
